The 2004 Annual GlaStar Rough River Fly-in
Seven flying Glastars attended the fly-in this year, as usual a few others could not make it for one reason or another. Flying in were Lester and Pat Hildebrand, Bill and Carol Yamokoski, Charles and Mary Eubanks, Russ and Susan James, Dan Dudley, Carlos Emmons, and another (sorry I lost my list). Current builders that attended were Mark and Lisa Neubaur, Mr. & Mrs. Allen Berg, Dick and Marilyn King, Kristen King, Howard Plevyak, and William Hayden,
Friday night we attended the EAA Hospitality Hour at the Lodge. There was plenty of drinks, snacks, and camaraderie. We met old and new friends. After the Hospitality Hour we retired to the cabin and ordered in pizza to go with our in cabin beverages. I think next year we will order pizza and stay at the Lodge, much easier for those staying at the Lodge.
On Saturday four Glastars, each carrying a Glastar builder, flew to Owensboro, KY for lunch. We ate at the Moonlite Bar-B-Q Restaurant which is famous for it's mutton and pork barbeque. After landing at Owensboro, we called the restaurant and was pickup by their van service. They say it is within walking distance, however the roads and intersections are much too busy to risk walking. As the van was turning into the restaurant we had to wait because of the heavy traffic turning into the small hamburger restaurant next to where we were going. When ask, the driver said it was the most popular hamburger restaurant around. He explained that they bake their own buns and grind their meat daily, and sell the best hamburger and it is only $.99. It must be good judging from the amount of heavy traffic. We had a fine lunch at the Moonlite, it was very good and we all ate too much. They had all types of meats, veggies, salads, and plenty of deserts. All you care to eat and it was $8.99 for everything, did I say we all ate too much.
We are fortunate to have a GlaStar Instructor who attends our fly-ins. Saturday, I received another lesson from Dan Dudley in an effort to build the 10-hour minimum required by the insurance companies. Dan also gives BFRs, so plan to get a BFR while you are at the Fly-in and save your self some time and money. If you are a builder, you can log Glastar time as well as get a BFR.
As last year, the weather was perfect. Friday and Saturday were sunny with a high of about 85 degrees. Sunday morning started out very foggy but by noon it was clearing with the sun breaking through.
