Horizontal Stabilizer

 Build Time - 87 hours

I chose to build the Horizontal Stabilizer using a jig setup in the basement.  The jig consisted of two adjustable floor jacks that were anchored into the basement floor and bolted to the floor joist above.  This provided very stable support for the spars and made assembly much easier.  The plan was  (after completing the HS) to move one of the jacks and hang the wing spars so that the wings could be build in the same jig.

Two floor jacks were anchored to the floor 126" apart, a 6"x 27"x1" oak scrap board was clamped to each with 3" muffler clamps.

Cleco clamps were placed under each of the top spar supports in order to provide the proper spar angle.

I used ratch straps to draw the skins up tight. Used angled wood pieces at the top.

Heavy fishing line was drawn tight across the top spar to provide alignment.

The leading edge was placed down in order to make assembly easier.

The height was perfect for working on the lower areas.

It was nice to be able to sit N spin, I mean work.

The height was just right for working from the top.
